These chemicals, known as endorphins, stimulate your body to feel this way. They are found to minimize the negative impact of stress and pain on your mind and body, and they are also associated with the feelings of euphoria.
What are Endorphins?
Discovered in 1975 by Hans W. Kosterlitz and John Hughes, endorphins have since been associated with the high feelings. These highs are associated with the same feelings that are produced by taking drugs.
How are they Related to Exercise?
To be able to develop a connection between endorphins and exercise, there needs to be a growing personal interest in workout and exercise. Several psychological studies have shown that exercise can be used as a mechanism for the treatment of alcoholism, pain, anxiety, hypertension, bulimia, depression, anorexia nervosa and addiction. While there are many other factors that play a part in this, the role of exercise cannot be disregarded. There are many more benefits of exercise than just working out to lose weight.
Exercise and Endorphins
Exercise is found to promote the release of endorphins. According to many studies, endorphins induce the perception of fatigue during exercise and also depress ventilation, playing a major role in the ventilator regulation of carbon dioxide. When endorphins are released in the body, the body reaches a feel-good state, and this is one of the main reasons many people engage in intense endurance exercises and activities and resist the urge to quit. The perception of pain for some is changed as a result of the release of endorphins.
Types of Endorphins
These are the two main neurochemicals in the brain that are associated with a reduction in pain.
Serotonin: This is the feel-good chemical released by the brain. In case of lower levels of serotonin, the body goes into the state of depression. Serotonin levels are found to be boosted through exercises such as biking, running and aerobics.
Anandamide: This is associated with the regulation of stress. The body is more prone to be affected by stress if there is a lack of anandamide in their body. Exercise is found to boost the production of this neurochemical as well.
While many people start exercising to lose weight, most will continue doing it after reaching their fitness goals because of the positive effects it has on the overall well-being and health of a person. This is caused by the presence and release of endorphins in the body, which is triggered by exercising.
