How To Keep Your Heart Healthy

Now this may seem like a recap of the fifth grade science lesson, but the optimal functioning of your heart is paramount for your survival. While many of you would be aware of the fact that the heart is responsible for pumping blood and thereby supplying essential nutrients and oxygen to the rest of the body using the circulatory system, not many would know that more than 610,000 Americans die of a heart disease every year – that makes heart diseases the cause of 1 out of every 4 deaths reported in the country.

The statistics is alarming and should have you worried. Heart diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the country, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be prevented. These simple tips can help you keep your heart healthy:

Get Yourself Tested

It is a good idea to get a complete medical examination of your body on a regular basis. While these tests can help you diagnose possible health problems you’re facing, cardiovascular genetic testing can help determine your genetic predisposition that can reveal any inherent risk of heart diseases that you are prone to. Genetic testing can help you establish what heart diseases you need to be extra careful about and then adapt accordingly for the proper functioning of your heart.

Maintain Healthy Weight

Obesity can lead to possible heart diseases. Hence, it is extremely important to maintain a healthy weight. Carefully watch what you are putting into your system. If you buy processed food, make sure you read the label and regulate the portions accordingly. Balance your diet with the right amounts of nutrition and limit drinking alcohol. Alcoholic drinks contain calories that sooner or later add up to your waistline.

Eat Healthy

It is important to focus on your diet. Eating healthy does not mean you cut down on everything except for leafy greens and fruits. It means eating nutritious food adequately distributed into at least 3 proper meals a day. Increase your fiber intake, add fish and other sources of omega3 to your diet, and cut down on the salt, carbs, and cholesterol that adversely affect your cardiovascular system.

Be Active

Exercise every day to break the inactive lifestyle. It doesn’t matter whether you work out for 15 minutes or 1 hour as long as you are making that heart pump faster – for better heart health, opt for cardio workouts – make sure you don’t exert yourself too much by taking up an expert level workout on your first day of building the habit.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is injurious to health. It increases your chances of getting a heart disease in addition to the added risk of getting lung or mouth cancer. The habit can end up damaging your arterial linings that consequently lead to an increase risk of cardiovascular diseases that may include heart attacks, stroke, and the coronary heart disease.

February is the American Heart Month. This, we think is a great time to begin working on maintaining your heart’s health and optimal functioning. It doesn’t take much – just simple lifestyle changes that can ensure a healthier and fulfilling life in the long run.
