All you need to know about the Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic Diet, another name for what is known as a low carb diet, makes use of ketones produced in the liver to be used as the source of energy. Also known as the low carb high-fat diet, it takes the idea of a low carb diet even further by requiring higher amounts of fat.

How it Works?

Eating foods full of carbohydrates results in the production of insulin and glucose in the body. Glucose is the main source of energy the body needs for day-to-day activities. Insulin is produced to aid glucose in processing itself into the bloodstream to be taken all over your body. If you are following a ketogenic diet with little or no carbs, your body is in need of an alternate source of energy to carry on its routine activities. This is where ketones come in.

Ketones and the Phenomenon of Ketosis

If there are little to no carbs in the body, the body releases fatty acids, stored as body fat, to produce energy. When the body is using fat as an energy source, the level of ketones is increased by the liver. This allows cells in need of energy to take it from the ketones circulating all over the body.
Ketosis takes place if there is an excess of blood ketones in the body, which the body uses as an alternative energy source. When ketosis is reached, you are depriving your body of its primary source of energy, the carbohydrates.

What are the Benefits?

The Ketogenic diet helps in weight loss, which is one of the main reasons people follow it. It is also found to help in reducing the sugar levels in your blood by decreasing the amount of glucose. The body’s insulin is not spurred by excess sugar or carbohydrates in the body. It can help increase good cholesterol. The Ketogenic diet is also found to be helpful for people who exercise, especially for people undergoing endurance training.

The Concerns

While the ketogenic diet is a healthy idea, especially if the goal is to lose weight, reducing the amount of vegetables and fruits in a diet is not always a good idea. Also, there are many restrictions that a lot of people might not be able to follow wholeheartedly. Therefore, many find it difficult to stick with it.

If you want to follow the ketogenic diet, you need to make it a lifestyle. Only then will you be able to reap the maximum benefits of it.
