What is genetic counseling?
Genetic counseling is a relatively new specialty in the healthcare to help individuals to understand and interpret their personal genetic information and how it relates to their health and health care related decisions. Genetic counselors can offer expertise in many areas, including prenatal counseling, cancer, and other areas of disease.

When should I seek genetic counseling?
Genetic counseling can be appropriate both prior to having a genetic test performed (pre-test counseling) and in helping you to understand the results and make the best decisions for you (post-test counseling). Pre-test counseling will focus on the scope and type of information that you will get as a result of the test and the general types of decisions that you will be able to make as a result of that test. Post-test counseling will focus on interpretation of those results and helping you understand the results, their implications, and your options about what to do with that information.

What kind of training do genetic counselors have?
All Pathway Genetic Counselors will have earned a Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited school and have passed the board examination or be in the process of acquiring board certification.

What does genetic counseling cost?
As with our genetic test, our goal is to make genetic counseling affordable and accessible. The basic price for genetic counseling is $40 for a call up to twenty minutes, or a full hour of genetic counseling can be purchased for $99.

What happens if a medically serious situation is identified?
In the event that we identify something in the testing that we feel it is medically necessary to counsel the member on, our genetic counselor will contact them proactively prior to releasing the results online. There is no charge for genetic counseling when Pathway Genomics deems it medically necessary.

What is the process for genetic counseling?
Members or non-members can contact us or via the online form in the member's area to contact our genetic counseling staff and schedule a counseling session. Once a time is scheduled, the genetic counselor will contact the individual at the established time. Individuals will be asked to verify their identity with a unique ID provided by Pathway before any genetic information is provided.

Are there any U.S. states where genetic counseling is not currently offered?
There are a few states where Pathway Genomics is still in the process of meeting the state requirements for genetic counseling. In such cases, the Pathway Genomics genetic counselor will explain that the conversation will be limited to education about terms and definitions and a referral may be made to a state licensed genetic counselor.
