Planning a family is one of the most important decisions a couple will make. Genetic testing has become part of this process, and can help your patients make informed preconception choices.
Both the American College of Gynecology and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine recommend cystic fibrosis carrier status testing as part of preconception care. Additionally, it is advisable that certain ethnic groups be tested for specific genetic disorders. For example, African Americans should be tested for mutations which cause Hemoglobin C and Jews of Eastern European descent should be tested for mutations which cause Tay-Sachs disease.
